Much of the recent habitat planting on Wandsworth Common has been designed to help create plant and wildlife corridors between different parts of the Common. Our ‘Connecting the Commons’ project is a collaboration between Beautify Balham and the Friends of Wandsworth Common, with support and funding from a Wandsworth Climate Action Microgrant, and has the more ambitious aim of improving connectivity between our three major local commons – Wandsworth, Clapham and Tooting.
Here are some simple things we’d love you to consider doing:
- Add a plant pot or container to a paved area, windowsill or balcony – and attract pollinators!
- Scatter wildflower seeds – even in plant pots! Autumn and spring are great times for this
- Experiment in a tree pit on your street, following Council guidelines
- New to gardening? Check out a beginner’s guide
- Learn about gardening for pollinators with friendly plants
- Make your front garden greener without compromising utility, with these expert tips
- If you have a back garden, consider a nature-friendly lawn, bird bath or turning a container into a “mini pond”
- Request a new street tree be planted on your street
- Share photos of your plants and visiting wildlife on social media or your local message group
Happy greening!
Each positive step – no matter how small – contributes to biodiversity, beauty, community, flood mitigation, and health and well-being,
Please send us your feedback, ideas and photos to: connectingthecommons.london@gmail.com
