Beautify Balham was founded by Jean Millar in 2020. Jean has been a Balham resident for over 40 years and is passionate about gardening and about the quality of her local environment.

Turning community goodwill into visible improvements in the public realm

Beautify Balham is a volunteer-led community group working alongside Wandsworth Council, local schools, and businesses. Our work focuses on making Balham cleaner, greener and more welcoming through projects that improve the shared spaces we all use. With the help and energy of local residents we aim to deliver practical environmental changes across Balham. Volunteers who are visibly invested in improving their local neighbourhood serve to create the impetus for others to join them. Growing community spirit and engagement. Our funding stems from sponsorship, accessing grants and competing for public funds which we use to achieve our goals.

We believe that small, practical actions taken together can make a meaningful difference to the places where we live, work and travel.

What We Do
Clean
We organise regular community litter picks that bring residents together to keep Balham’s streets, green spaces and public areas clean and cared for.

Green
We strive to increase biodiversity in the local environment by planting bulbs, wildflowers and greenery. Our aim is to connect larger green spaces by enticing local residents and schools to plant in their gardens, adding biodiversity in forgotten corners of Balham and making the area a more attractive place for everyone.

Connect
We work in partnership with Wandsworth Council, local organisations and volunteers to turn community ideas and sustainability initiatives into practical projects that benefit the whole community.

Why does this matter?
Living in an urban concrete jungle, can sometimes feel overwhelming, lonely and disconnected with nature.
We believe that each project whether a litter pick, a planting initiative or a greening project, contributes to a wider goal: strengthening local pride and connectivity, improving shared green spaces, empowering residents to take positive actions and building a stronger engaged community spirit in Balham.
